xbmc
by Jon on Dec.16, 2009, under Computer stuff
Loaded xbmc onto the laptop this afternoon. Have to say I’m impressed. It had no problem playing any of my stuff.
Set the laptop to output through the HDMI port and whey hey displayed very nicely on the 42″ plasma in the lounge. With the addition of the Dell remote I’ve got a nice remote station for watching the vids
.
I think I may show this off to swmbo and suggest on of the new ion based mini machines. Will have to workout a remote control for it though. If I could put in a password and drop back to the full desktop it could be useful.

swmbo is impressed with HD played through the laptop – I expect we’ll be getting sky HD in the new year.
Now I’ll have to sit down and work out exactly what I want my home entertainment setup to actually do.
I know that I’ll need to access my media store (posh name for a f’in big server) as I’ve well over 60GB of various woodworking vids (300 files in various formats) along with around 8GB’s of music. One day I suppose I’ll get around to working out what the other 300GB on the server actually is.
Note to self – need to get around to ripping the rest of my CD’s at some point.
What I do know is this:
1) Need to access everything everywhere
2) Need to devise a way to archive stuff off the Sky box – this WILL fill up very quickly.
3) XBMC will be used as the front end to access stored media.
With item 2 I don’t really care about archiving the HD content – simply capturing it to SD and storing it would likely suffice. Well it’ll have to suffice unless I can find a way of striping the HDCP from a HDMI connection thus allowing copying of HD content.
If I’m going to rip all our DVD’s (and future BluRay) disks then I suppose I’d better increase the 1TB of storage that is currently on the network.
.
I’m sure I’ll blog something in the near future about server/client upgrades
I’ve just about decided on the ION based box for the lounge front end. Backend box will likely be some Quad processor thingy – gives me plenty of available power for transcoding.
